On Saturday, February 21, at the “King Of Kings 128” fight show in Riga ( Dream Boxing ), Latvian boxer Milans Volkovs claimed victory and captured the vacant IBF Intercontinental cruiserweight title (90.7 kg).
Volkovs defeated Argentina’s Cristian Fabian Luis (13-4) by unanimous decision (99-91, 100-90, 99-91). At the start of the fight, both boxers were not shy about exchanging punches. However, this task proved more difficult for the Argentine, who is six centimeters shorter than the Latvian fighter. By the second round, Volkovs found his rhythm and preferred distance, landing more precise combinations.
As the fight approached its conclusion, the initiative fully belonged to Volkovs, who appeared fresher and more active. Nevertheless, Luis continued to respond with several dangerous punches of his own. Even in the 10th round, fans could not complain about a lack of effort, as both fighters kept searching for a decisive blow.
The 26-year-old Volkovs secured the 12th victory of his professional career. He has suffered four defeats, while two of his bouts have ended in draws.
In the third round, both boxers continued to entertain the crowd with punch exchanges, though Volkovs once again landed more frequently. In the fourth and fifth rounds, both men remained offensively focused, although their explosiveness and speed began to decrease in the fifth.
At the beginning of the sixth round, Volkovs landed a very strong punch that made the Argentine significantly more cautious. During these rounds, a cut opened above Luis’ left eye, prompting the referee to consult the ringside doctor before the start of the seventh round.
